Silver jewelry’s modernist appeal is increasing in 2022 – The Zoe Report | Directory Mayhem

Colorful chunky rings, multicolored beads and waist chains are among the biggest Y2K jewelry trends making a revival. But the lively and whimsical aesthetic tends to be more maximalist and doesn’t always appeal to those with understated and minimalist tastes. Enter: The 2022 silver jewelry trend – another nostalgic look with a more streamlined sensibility that lends itself well to stripped down preferences. But before you worry that your favorite yellow gold pieces are now obsolete, rest assured that the gilded age is all but over. Instead, think of it as a shift where less saturated and mixed metals are more readily embraced.

Silver’s prominence has slowly accelerated in recent seasons, suggesting a more subdued metal era. Sleek and edgy iterations appeared on designer catwalks for Spring/Summer 2022, including Givenchy, Paco Rabanne and Jonathan Simkhai. And for Autumn/Winter 2022, heavier pieces stood out at Saint Laurent, Balmain and Jil Sander, while Bottega Veneta, Lanvin and Cartier’s collaboration with Sacai revealed captivating mixed metal looks.

Mounser founder Amanda Assad Mounser says that modernist minimalism, the 2000 rave scene and the early aughts and goth fashion movements are driving the silver-centric trend. “The quieter movements like modernism created a new approach to minimal dressing, stripping color in jewelry to be more subdued in the name of rationalization and instead focusing on sculptural forms,” the jewelry designer tells TZR. “These iconic fashion brands have created an influx of carefree colors and sex-appealing silhouettes juxtaposed with a dark and edgy undertone that naturally lends itself to clean metal jewelry devoid of color.”

Assad Mounser also combines silver’s current appeal with strong teenage nostalgia at the forefront of fashion, embracing the jewelry trends rooted in many people’s first experiences with luxury. “Remember your first Tiffany heart pendant necklace, Elsa Peretti bean pendant, or Chrome Hearts purchase? These things create a renewed connection to the past that we will carry into the future,” she says, similar to the enduring popularity of vintage jewelry trends.

In the same vein, Completedworks founder Anna Jewsbury says there’s a simplicity to silver’s highly polished and mirror-like qualities that feels extraordinarily modern and relevant. She tells TZR, “I think silver in itself embodies an emerging ‘cool’ sensibility that’s probably going to be around for a while.” But since these things in fashion are always cyclical, including new jewelry trends, the designer believes that both can exist simultaneously for different moods and purposes. “Ultimately, jewelry should last a lifetime. In a way, it is shielded from the vicissitudes of the zeitgeist.”

Additionally, the combination of yellow gold and silver ultimately lends itself to more accessory options — a concept anyone investing in jewelry can appreciate. “Gold has historically been synonymous with ultimate luxury,” says Assad Mounser. “I think people are starting to look at silver with an increased sense of value as well.”

These thoughts could help motivate those who are interested in silver jewelry and are useful when determining what new pieces to buy this year. Jewsbury and Assad Mounser both see sculptural silhouettes and large-scale designs as the ultimate starting point. “The reserved nature of [silver] allows you to take a closer look at the shape and form of the piece in a fun and adventurous way,” says Jewsbury.

Meanwhile, Assad Mounser emphasizes the quiet cool of bolder designs, which can range from classic pieces to contemporary modular jewellery. “I think an incredible pair of sculptural earrings or really interesting hoop earrings can elevate any outfit,” she tells TZR. “I also love chunky chains and icy tennis necklaces — there’s a point of interest, but it’s understated and doesn’t yell at you like gold can sometimes.”

When it comes to styling silver jewelry with optimal freshness, Jewsbury says the understated material pairs well with bolder outfits without being overbearing. “Silver pieces also look really great layered, even with different styles.” Assad Mounser is also for layering.I like to pair really thin tennis necklaces with chains,” she tells TZR. Adding, “I have multiple piercings so I like to stack different shapes along my ear as well. Silver works well for this because of its desaturated hue – it doesn’t feel like too much but is still alluring and intriguing.”

As for the clothes that go best with silver, Assad Mounser says streamlined black silhouettes always look incredible. “It can be edgy or minimalist with a touch of chic noir,” she says. On the more casual end of the spectrum, the designer likes the look of silver jewelry with classics, like a crisp white button-down paired with the perfect pair of jeans. “I also think silver lends itself to any brand that offers poppies that are currently positioned for nightlife because it feels less overpowering than gold against a deep multi-tone saturation.”
