Creating Jurassic World Adventure

P&P Projects provided turnkey services for the two attractions. For example, for Jurassic World Adventure, the team worked closely with Universal Creative to translate the original attraction plan into the final experience concept.

Speaking of process, Philip van StratumCEO of P&P Projects, says: “We started with an amazing co-creation that has resulted in a powerful concept that we can continue with.”

The company then extensively adapted the defined concept into a creative and technically engineered package, followed by extensive production of the show sets and thematic elements in the attraction queue and the ride itself. For this project, P&P worked with partners such as Framestore, the specialist for visual effectsand Creature Technology Co. and Animax Designs, a specialist in creating animatronics and interactive characters.

The company’s show sets have been carefully coordinated to blend seamlessly with elements such as media and animatronics.

Eppo Seegers is a project manager at P&P Projects. Regarding the creative development of the Dark Ride he says:

“It was very exciting to be entrusted with a world-renowned intellectual property and bring it to life in a new attraction. We were proud to work on it with Universal Creative – a party that doesn’t compromise on quality when realizing a concept. For us, this meant we could do what P&P Projects is good at: deliver extremely detailed work while telling stories through our showsets and theme elements.”

Next level detailing

Van Stratum also notes that this project allowed the P&P Projects team to make the driving experience and immersive aspects as high quality and believable as possible:

“We have created a level of detail that takes it to the next level. It’s similar to carefully crafted aspects you’ll notice on a movie set if you look closely. These evoke a certain atmosphere and tell a story. In the ride, this adds that extra layer of “experience” that helps make it so compelling. We can safely say that the attraction provided by Universal works on a world-class stage.”

On some of the challenges related to the project, he adds:

“We ‘prefabricated’ our show sets and theme elements, including an extensive amount of concrete work. This allows for a quick and smooth on-site installation process as all initial construction work is done in-house beforehand. This is probably the largest precast scale of concrete show sets ever made this way in our industry.”

Zeegers adds: “These elements were designed to literally set the scene in the large-scale environment surrounding the ride – they interact and complement life-size dinosaurs. Despite their enormous size, our products had to be easy to disassemble prior to shipment and easy to assemble on site – with all parts fitting together seamlessly.”

An immersive experience

The company has over three decades of turnkey experience in the industry, which means they were able to apply their specialty in both design and production to this project.

“We took special care to ensure that ALL aspects of our elements support the overall story. That is what defines their manufacture, their construction, their integration and so on,” explains Zeegers. The attraction’s show sets and themed elements are extremely detailed and have been very carefully put together with the surrounding show elements. “This cements the truly immersive quality of the attraction.”

Zeegers also speaks of the importance of thinking ahead: “We continuously maintain a problem-solving perspective throughout our projects. We anticipate challenges early and tackle them head-on while we brainstorm potential solutions with our customers.”

A key feature of Jurassic World Adventure is that it doesn’t require experience-enhancing add-ons like 3D glasses. It uses detailed showsets, next-level animatronics, and special effects, all in a seamless blend with media elements for an immersive experience.

Adds Van Stratum, “There are quite a lot of modern day dark rides where media plays the central role and show sets are complementary. In this attraction, the media complement the physical and tangible. It adds depth and expands the scenes in a careful blending with the show’s physical elements. This gives the show sets a fitting opportunity to serve their purpose as an immersive addition to the experience.”

Zeegers says: “This attraction really immerses you on all fronts and puts you right in the heart of the action. Instead of being transported into a story centered on other characters, you are placed in the center of the world of this popular film series.”

A unique, award-winning attraction

The team say they’re honored to be a part of it award-winning Project.

Van Stratum and Zeegers agree: “We have been blessed with great collaboration and trust between all parties involved, all of whom have done real quality work. This has made it possible to turn this project, which was unique even in its initial conception, into an experience that has exceeded expectations to this day.

“We believed that Jurassic World Adventure had set a new standard for themed entertainment and we are proud that the award recognizes that. We look forward to a future of new developments to follow this amazing attraction.”
