Trees Lake draws kids for a great outdoor adventure in Deming, NM – The Deming Headlight | Dauktion

Zenovia Garcia, 10, beams before casting her line into Trees Lake during Saturday's Great Outdoor Adventure in Deming. Zenovia and her family spent the day fishing for free and enjoying fun outdoor recreation and a "field to table" Having lunch.

DEMING – When work began on a municipal water conservation project in 2018, the plan was to create an outdoor recreation area for local residents and neighboring communities. Built on five acres of what was formerly the city’s landfill site on North Country Club Road, Trees Lake fulfills this city plan by providing a 25 million gallon fishing spot, recreation area and potential waterfowl sanctuary.

The lake is below Voier’s “Pit Park” and was the scene of the Great Outdoors Adventure for families and their children on Saturday. The event, hosted by the City of Deming and sponsored by a variety of wilderness, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, included free fishing for children accompanied by parents and several outdoor activities, including a free “field-to- tables”.

“It’s just great,” Ray Trejo said of Saturday’s turnout. Trejo is the Southern Outreach Coordinator for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. “Growing up in Deming, we didn’t have opportunities like this. This is something special for our kids to experience fun nature activities and also learn a few things about conservation and game and fish.”

New Mexico Game and Fish officials registered children and provided them with ready-to-fish rods and reels free of charge.

Trejo, along with city officials, was instrumental in bringing the all-day attraction to Deming. Deming Mayor Benny Jasso was in attendance and volunteered to help prepare lunch.

It was estimated that nearly 300 family members attended the event, while children enjoyed free fishing, a beginner-intermediate archery class, instructional tables set up by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and a mobile tackle shop. Children were signed up to fish and received a free rod and reel with all the amenities for ready-to-fish action.
