How Retailers are Hiring for the 2022 Holidays – HR Dive | Directory Mayhem

The backdrop this Christmas season looks very different than last year.

While many consumers have embraced a sense of pre-pandemic normalcy when shopping in-store, inflation has largely hampered the industry’s success in 2022 so far.

Some reports expect holiday sales growth to slow this year compared to last year, with Deloitte estimating growth of between 4% and 6% in 2022, compared to a 15.1% increase in the same period last year. Meanwhile, Mastercard’s latest estimates are expecting US growth of 7.1% but noting that inflation will play a role in consumer expectations for rebates.

“This holiday season, consumers may be looking for ways to navigate the inflationary environment — from finding deals to making compromises that create extra wiggle room in their gifting budgets,” Michelle Meyer, U.S. Chief Economist at Mastercard Economics Institute, said in a statement.

Retailers appear to be listening to this need, with both Amazon and Target offering early Christmas sales starting in October. Brands are also looking for new partnerships to lure shoppers this season, with Target signing an exclusive multi-year deal with toy company FAO Schwarz and Macy’s getting a limited-edition Christmas edition from Kylie Cosmetics.

In this unique economic environment, some retailers are hiring more staff than others in preparation for the season. Here’s a look at previous job postings from companies.

Walmart

Walmart’s hiring efforts for the holiday season this year are looking very different from 2021. The company’s hiring for the 2022 season has slowed up to 40,000 additional employees, down about 75% from 150,000 new hires last year.

Walmart plans to hire positions ranging from seasonal store associates to permanent full-time truck drivers. Current employees will be offered more hours for the holidays.

The retailer also announced new return options and windows for the holiday season, including a home pickup for Walmart+ members.

Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to close by 9,000 seasonal workers this year, according to a press release from the company. The outdoor retailer is beginning recruiting by holding its fifth annual National Signing Day on September 28th.

For the second quarter results in August CEO Lauren Hobart had stated that the company was not struggling with labor market issues that were plaguing the industry, noting that both stores and distribution centers were staffed well in advance of the holiday season.

In addition to Thanksgiving, employees have access to a 25% in-store discount. The retailer features across its portfolio at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Public Lands, Field & Stream and Going, Going, Gone! shops across the country.

Macy’s

This year, Macy’s is changing its vacation plans, counting jobs rather than people. The department store said this week it was working to fill up more than 41,000 full-time and part-time seasonal jobs at its Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, supply chain locations and call centers.

The company announced this last year hire about 76,000 Full- and part-time workers for the season, but including more than 10,300 who switched to permanent employment, as well as those who worked only part of the season, a company spokesman said.

Macy’s said nearly a third of store managers began their careers during the holiday season. Pay starts at $15 per hour, with access to flexible scheduling that may include optional overtime. Employees receive a discount and may be able to earn additional income through various programs.
